Marist Schools of La Tuque

An album page the fiftieth anniversary of the arrival of the Marist La Tuque illustrates some of the buildings where classes are given primary and secondary schools reserved for the male customers of the city. We can discover the various developments of the Commercial Street School, now the boulevard Ducharme, institution often called "college."

1911

The building that hosted the Marist brothers when they arrived in early 1911, was built in part on 2 May 1910 and initially hosted services the first municipality in VILLAGE OF THE TOQUE . It was sort of the first City Hall.

Located at the corner of Commercial St. Zéphirin and then sold to RA Bartlett and Hermann Martinson, for the sum of $ 2,670.61 (1) , it was converted into an orphanage, which became known as the Sacred heart. An extension was built and was installed six bathrooms. We dug a cellar to install a hot air furnace and a gallery was added in front. For a time it served as home to the contractors who built the school St. Zephirin.

Onesimus Dallaire, mayor from 1955 to 1961, and Aldor Dupont, the city clerk from 1939 to about 1962, attended this first school.

Today, the twin houses occupy the lot.

1912

Company in 1912, construction of a "college" was completed this year follows and, April 1, 1913, the Marist settled there.

1924

Without Quebec flag is that of

France that floats above the "college" Saint Zéphirin.

The number of students increases and a wing doubles the size of the school.

1937-1938

the building was added to another schedule, called 'Industrial School. "

He gave them over wood and iron since 1927. Raîche Micheline Roy posted in the site I COME FROM THE TUQUE a rare photo from 1929 with the first graduates of this school, surprisingly headed by a "school municipality", whose members were Lucian Ringuette, Edward Belleau, D . Dufour and Ed Smith, and President Emile Hardy-Donat.

The school staff: Jean-Michel, director, Charles Borromeo, assistant director, and Alphonse Roy, secretary-treasurer, the Professors Paul-Emile Malo, carpentry, A. Couture fit. Students were E. Bolduc, L. Hudon, C. Adams, the president of the promotion, J. Crest, vice president, L. Lamontagne and O. Duchesneau. Source: Archives of Raîche Micheline Roy.

The building has been the subject of some postcards. It dates back to 1940 and was produced by "Editor Barre.

1951

Another extension is to increase the size of the school. It includes among other things a music room.

This photo sent to me by Dave Tafel, the son of Alton Tafel, plant manager of IPC, as of June 1956. One can see the north wall of the school St. Zephirin. By enlarging the picture, there is an interesting detail: at the center, between the plateau and the golf course, some vestiges of the long staircase, from Commercial Street, now the boulevard Ducharme, at street level Lacroix led at the bottom. For years, residents along a path through which started from the bottom of the hill from the hospital and resulted in the school yard. Archives Dave Tafel.

1962

A fire destroyed part of the school. Once the reconstruction is done, we decided to give the name of Eugene-Corbeil to the institution.

Little Lake St. Louis leveraged

Lake St. Louis, the little lake and Latuquoises Latuquois.
July 25, 2008

I do not know if Benoit Hudon and Jacques Michel, creators page I come from LA TOQUE [1] on the popular social book FACEBOOK, would have imagined that their project would become too large and also a network of friendly reunion: that it was attended by nearly 1400 people, who leave their comments, but especially valuable photos on the past of the city.

/ / / === / / /

For some time I come over from LA TOQUE, I saw several photos related to Lake St. Louis and I I remembered the magazine Entertainment Saguenay, which in July 1967, had the marathon swim THE TWENTY-FOUR OF THE TOQUE, its front page.

The photo on the front page, probably 1964 or 1965, gives an overview of the condition of Little Lake in the mid-sixties: the beach, the catfish, the flotilla of paddle boats, before the O- 100-20, and the big star that preceded the giant water lily. can also see the park from St. Eugene, in its natural state, the convent, not yet demolished, and several quiet streets north of Lake Saint-Honoré, Saint Paul, Saint-Michel de la Plage .

Writing Journal no shortage of humor to it, politics is just entertainment! It is not wrong: how politicians and politicians did not they give us the gift of fun? Or move us to tears by their decisions insipid, stupid sometimes ...

The content of advertisements is still worth more than one point of view, because it provides information on the nature and activities of enterprises and their managers. It Rapaille amount of data useful for making the story of a community.

The place of rendezvous for much of the youth latuquois in those years was the dance hall 0-100-20, owned by one of the organizers of the marathon swim Team Gaston Fortin, who had his establishment as "restaurant athletes." Several rock bands have latuquois provided the musical entertainment.

On the top photo, part of the room 0-100-20, and right away timekeepers whose team was mainly composed of clerical main plant of the Canadian International Paper. Among them, Richard Rochette, Jacques Dallaire, Jean-Paul Dompierre, Jean-Pierre Dumont, Pierre Cantin ... If I remember correctly, the head of statistics was Rosh Lortie.

Another advantage of these announcements, the street number of establishments to locate the location where they were before being destroyed or transformed.

Gaston Fortin, later, alderman and mayor of the city, was the group that launched the global project in 1965. A great team of volunteers has managed to make this sport a major event, the equal of the famous swim across Lake St. John.

[1] I am convinced that Title would be much more catchy and better reflect the fundamentally speaking of the city if it were translated, or at least presented in both languages. Could I suggest to the administrator of the page, Christine Hudon, this formulation in French?

I'm from LA TOQUE.

Accuracy Of Arctrainer

May 1960, the parade not to Champagnat.

This year is a big vegetable Canadian Armed Forces who shows up at La Tuque to inspect the Army Cadet High School Champagnat Deputy Chief of General Staff of the Defence Staff General Jean-Victor Allard, accompanied this time, French Canadian officers.

The photos are from the Scrapbook of

fiftieth anniversary of the Marist Brothers. La Tuque.

Lionel's brother Albert and Roger Mulligan welcome Allard to Airport of La Tuque.

Montgrain Aubert, music professor and director of the little harmony, reviews his musicians with Major-General Allard. In the foreground, left, Robert Danis, who seems to wear the uniform of the "great" Harmony, and, right, Montgrain Peter, son of music director.

A note in passing on Page I COME FROM THE BEANIE [1] , a place very interesting exchange, one wonders about the identity of the drum- Harmony majors who succeeded Adelard Potvin. It seems that Jean-Guy Deslauriers, the painter, was one of them. Certainly, according to Michel Grandbois, professor of Champagnat retired, who was part of two bands, Camil Bouchard was the drum major of the latter. Moreover, several students in this school have participated in the great harmony.

The presence of so many French military was probably a harbinger of the arrival of the Quiet Revolution and the progress of French in Quebec.

Yet advertisers section of the Scrapbook shows that La Tuque was still colonized equally in terms of language. The school had in effect agreed to place ads entirely in English.

is the case of one of the oldest shops in town, a dry goods from the shopping, "ET Hillier & Sons Ltd, men's wear", which states that "your appearance is our business" and garage "JF Keenan Ltd, which presents itself as a" dealer "Chevrolet and Oldsmobile, which operates out" Tessier St.!

Other businesses, most owned by French, displayed a name in English.

We read indeed "Dubois Motor Sales - " Frank Spain Co. Ltd. - "Laviolette adjusment Office" - "Canadian Tire and Repair Co. Ltd.." - "Duchesne Ltd, Furniture -" Electric Inc. St. Maurice. " .

Other times, other manners ...

It will take several years to a campaign of French language, beginning with the CIP plant, which I ' I participated actively, make things happen and we get rid of this attitude of the colonized.
